The A-Z of Interior Design - A

I've decided to blog into the new year with my A-Z of interior design.  I hope you enjoy it!  Don't be shy to leave your comments below.

Arco floor lamp - one of the most popular floor lamps ever made.  The Arco was inspired by the street lamps in Italy at the time and combines the elements of a floor and a hanging lamp.

Achille Castiglioni was born in Milan in 1918 and died in 2002.  He graduated in architecture in 1944 and became one of the most important industrial designers of the 20th century, producing more than 150 products during his career, including lighting products for Flos, furniture for Zanotta, and home products for Alessi.  He researched shapes, techniques and new materials with a view to developing an integral design process.  He was presented with the illustrious Compasso d'Oro award on an impressive nine occasions.

During his teaching years, Achille Castiglioni would enthusiastically show how simple objects could create intelligent, inspiring designed if they fulfilled their function with humour and vitality.  He would tell his students to: start from scratch, stick to common sense, and know your goals and means (resources like technology or materials available to develop and produce your product). MoMA’s permanent collection in New York hosts no less than fourteen of his works one of which is the Arco lamp.

Create a Focal Point

As an interior designer I often walk into homes to find "uncomfortable" looking spaces.  One of the most common problems is that there is no focal point within a room, thereby creating confusion to the viewer.  One room can - and should - have many focal points as it is viewed from many angles when in use.  Think about how your room looks from all sides and how you can create interest and a place for the eye to rest comfortably.  The answer is not always in the obvious places such as fireplaces or windows.

Here a sofa and the wall behind it become a focal point.  The large piece of art forces your eye to rest in that area and on the sofa and cushion combination…

From this angle, in the same room, the chair and the oversized angle poise floor lamp catch your attention…

Chill around the fire

When you need a cool place to sit and enjoy the view or simply relax in front of a real flame, this outdoor space ticks all the boxes.

The Adventurous Cats

What a great series of paintings by artist Heather Mattoon, who loves to bring out the unique personality of each cat.
Here's Lupe - an artist who uses intuition and dreams to conjure up imagery for drawings and paintings.
This is Vincent - he plays football and is European.  He takes acting classes and loves his hoodie!
Dexter is the envy of most of his friends.  He writes for a travel magazine and can speak five languages.

Baby Feet

Babies are born with perfect feet and here's a way to cherish and keep those memories forever at Babyprints South Hertfordshire.

They can even miniaturise your baby's hand or feet prints into silver jewellery including cufflinks...

or to create a personalised piece of art…
