Create a Focal Point

As an interior designer I often walk into homes to find "uncomfortable" looking spaces.  One of the most common problems is that there is no focal point within a room, thereby creating confusion to the viewer.  One room can - and should - have many focal points as it is viewed from many angles when in use.  Think about how your room looks from all sides and how you can create interest and a place for the eye to rest comfortably.  The answer is not always in the obvious places such as fireplaces or windows.  

Here a sofa and the wall behind it become a focal point.  The large piece of art forces your eye to rest in that area and on the sofa and cushion combination…
